In 2012, the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) and American Psychological Association through its Commission on Accreditation (CoA) approved and signed the First Street Accord. The accord is a mutual recognition agreement on accreditation. It demonstrates that the APA CoA views the accreditation standards and principles of the CPA as equivalent to the COA’s Standards of Accreditation in Health Service Psychology. Similarly, the CPA views the accreditation Standards of the COA as equivalent to the accreditation standards and principles of the CPA. This mutual recognition agreement applies only to the accreditation activities each association undertakes in its own country. It is an agreement that recognizes the equivalence of the systems of accreditation of the CPA and APA and does not confer any reciprocal accreditation status on any of the programs they accredit.

APA president and CEO Antonio E. Puente, PhD, and Arthur C. Evans, PhD, respectively, hosted CPA president and CEO Patrick Baillie, PhD, and Karen R. Cohen, PhD, respectively, as the First Street Accord was re-signed during the Council of Representatives meeting on Friday, Aug. 4, 2017, held in conjunction with the APA’s 125th Annual Convention, in Washington, D.C. In celebration of this event, Jaime Diaz-Granados, PhD, executive director of the APA Education Directorate hosted a reception to mark this special occasion.
